About Us
Beaded Medical Jewelry is a family owned business, started by my husband Joe and I to bring some artistry and fine craftsmanship to the medical identification so many of us need to wear. Both Joe and I come from the eye care industry (I’m an optometrist; he’s an optician) so we’ve been interested promoting fashion and style for years now.
As Joe would say, I like to dabble in the arts. I started my career as an Art Therapist and have taken many classes in art, enameling and jewelry making before becoming interested in beading. Joe has also found beading fun and creative.
Our introduction to beading was simple. My aunt, a diabetic with a heart condition, wondered if we could design her a stylish medical alert bracelet. She thought that most of them were unattractive. If we could make her something unique and fashionable, she would consider wearing it. Though we didn’t know it then, that bracelet was the beginning of something really special.
You see, the more we thought about this, the more we realized how many people should be wearing medical alert jewelry — and weren’t. In fact, Joe decided he was one of them. He just went through major heart surgery and has a severe penicillin allergy, and if he were unconscious, no one would know about his medical conditions.
Why are so many people taking this kind of chance? Not on purpose certainly. Some people just don’t think about it and others don’t like the look of the medical alert jewelry that is available. What Joe and I have uncovered is a way to make medical identication jewelry fun and fashionable (still functional too, of course) so that more people will actually want to wear it.
